    Summer’s End, Peace, and Gratitude

Summer is rapidly winding down to a grinding halt.  This seems barely possible as it seems it only started a week or so ago.  Summer’s yearly end brings with it big changes for our family.  It marks the end of the Stay At Home Mom portion of my year and begins the Frantic Working Mom part.  Every year I try to enter this transition with gratitude and peacefulness but it doesn’t always work.  Gratitude for the fact that I get to have the best of both worlds…I get to spend the summer home with my babes and I also get to spend a portion of the year focusing on the career I’ve worked so hard…

    Raspberries Everywhere

Monday was the opening day of U Pick Raspberries at a farm not far from home.  I took the kids to pick strawberries at the same farm last summer but we missed the short strawberry season this summer since I was in Boston at the time.  I have been anxiously awaiting raspberry season to get my U Pick fix for the year. I have an odd affection for picking my own fruit on other people’s farms.  I don’t try to understand it-it just is what it is.  There’s just something so rustic and homey about it.  My Martha tendencies get to shine through in all their glory.  Ahhhhhh….contentment.   I literally dragged my…

    Summer Bridge Activities

I found this workbook series for my boy to work on over the summer and it’s worked out really well so I thought I’d share.  It’s called Summer Bridge Activities-it’s designed to review material from the grade your child just finished in the beginning of summer and then gradually begins to give them a preview of skills for the upcoming grade.  The idea is that the child completes one or two pages each day-each month of summer is color coded and labeled for that day (i.e. the second section, day 18 corresponds to July 18th).  Mostly my boy has been able to complete the pages on his own with minimal…

    A Weekend at Home

This weekend was one of the first in what seems like an eternity that we didn’t have somewhere to go or something to do.  We just stayed at home and got some things accomplished, despite of the heat wave that has descended upon the Midwest.  Holy hell, is it hot out.  The humidity is practically unbearable.  But I’m not complaining…I’ll take this over the icy, frigid winter that is just around the corner any day.  So, we did old married people with kids kinds of things.  I worked in my garden, clawing up the earth around my vegetable beds to aerate it.  I guess this is something you’re supposed to do?  I don’t know for sure…I’m…

    Swimming Lessons

´╗┐Have I mentioned how much I love where I live?  I do.  It’s such a nice feeling.  We moved here just last October so we are enjoying our first summer in this smallish town.  My dream is that eventually we’ll have actual friends here in our neighborhood to socialize with. Hang out on each other’s decks, watch each other’s kids, gossip about which ever neighbors aren’t around…that kind of thing.  But it turns out that in order to make friends you have to go and introduce yourself to people and get to know them.  People don’t apparently knock on your door and say, “Hi!  I heard you’re new in town! …

    Banana Berry Smoothies!

We are anxiously awaiting the start of the U Pick Strawberry Season here in Wisconsin…it’s gotten off to a slow start due to the unseasonably cool (and by cool I mean that I think a few days ago it actually got down to 40 degrees) spring we’ve been having.  Last year was my first experience with picking strawberries and I’ve been dreaming thinking about it ever since.  There’s a big farm not far from here that gives you a hay ride out to the fields and drops you off with your empty baskets and lets you go to town.  The kids loved it last year and I can’t wait to take…

    The Graduate

It is officially the first day of Summer Vacation around here.  The day it really hits home that Summer has come…I should be running around like a looney tunes today, what with it being a week day morning and all…but I’m not.  I am drinking coffee and doing silly dances with my kids (I just retrieved the little game “London Bridge is Falling Down” complete with actions from the bowels of my memory-don’t ask me how) and I’m positively blissed out.  Blissed. Out.  So much so that I feel kind of guilty.  You would think I completely hate my job…I don’t.  It’s just that it can become so stressful…and adding…

    Teacher Gift Idea

Ahhhh, the sweet taste of freedom!  The school year officially ended for both my boy and I today at 12pm.  I have much to post regarding my boy Z’s Kindergarten Graduation, our summer plans and my general state of being after being released from the role of working mom just hours ago….but I can’t really wrap my head around any of those things at the moment.  I refuse to process that Z has finished his first year of formal schooling.  I will not accept that in 9 months time he has gone from a virtual baby to this big kid who knows things like how to read, and add numbers,…
