A Going on a Bear Hunt Kind of Saturday
So many of our weekends are taken up with all those things that can take over the life of a young family. Birthday parties, baby showers, soccer tournaments, family commitments… On rare weekends when life is quiet and it’s just the four of us, we have a little tradition of going out for a morning family walk. Two kids, the dog, and two travel mugs of steaming coffee for Husband and I. This morning was one of those times. For some reason it was especially memorable. Very “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” if you know what I mean. If you don’t, it’s a modern classic children’s book by Michael Rosen…

Monopoly Lessons
It’s a quiet day around here. Miss A has been sick since Sunday morning…high fever, upset tummy, sore throat, the whole nine yards. My nephew has the same symptoms and his doc thinks it might be Mono. Awesome. Did I mention we spent the weekend with my nephew last weekend? Yeah. I’m saying a little prayer every five minutes that she gets better soon and that neither of those germy little punks actually has something serious…school starts in a few weeks and we have a lot more summer to soak up! So…Mr. Man decided today we needed to play some board games. He loves a good board game. His current…

A Chocolate Vanilla Layer Cake From Heaven
Mr. Man had the audacity to turn seven earlier this week. I distinctly remember forbidding him to turn seven last year at this time (you can read about that here) and the little punk went ahead and did it anyway. I didn’t cry this year…even though my inner Sappy Mama really wanted to what with all the reminders that my baby is gone and this big, stinky, opinionated kid is slowly replacing him that every birthday brings. Instead, I focused my sentimental energies into creating the best birthday cake ever. Okay, maybe there have been prettier birthday cakes and technically superior birthday cakes but this one was definitely the tastiest…

The Raspberry Tradition
It’s that time of year, again. Raspberries! Today was opening day of the raspberry picking season and the kiddos and I indulged in all the very berry goodness. We did this last year as well which I thoroughly documented here if you would like to go back and read all about the early stages of my fruit picking obsession. I’m sorry to report that my enthusiasm for u pick fruit has not waned one bit since last year. I will not bore you with the gratuitous berry shots this time around. I promise. I would like to share a new raspberry recipe I found. Yum! First though, we need…

When You Are Six
My little boy is not so very little anymore. Six years old is quite big if you didn’t know this. When you are six you have a mouth full of missing teeth, you shout weird grown-up-ish phrases like, “Yeah, Baby!”, and you no longer have any interest in hearing The Very Quiet Cricket over and over again before bed but instead, enjoy having the entire series of Harry Potter read to you and you ask intricate questions about plot and character development along the way. It’s mind boggling. It’s mind boggling because when you are six, your mother still has vivid memories of the extreme heat during those weeks of summer before you were…
