A Going on a Bear Hunt Kind of Saturday

So many of our weekends are taken up with all those things that can take over the life of a young family. Birthday parties, baby showers, soccer tournaments, family commitments… On rare weekends when life is quiet and it’s just the four of us, we have a little tradition of going out for a morning family walk. Two kids, the dog, and two travel mugs of steaming coffee for Husband and I. This morning was one of those times. For some reason it was especially memorable.  Very “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” if you know what I mean. If you don’t, it’s a modern classic children’s book by Michael Rosen…

A Fabulous Photography Book for Moms

Happy Wednesday, my friends! Just a quick post since this week is already kicking my ass.  I’m so tired right now I could fall asleep with my eyes open and it’s only 7pm.  I still have to do the dishes, make cupcakes (more on that another day), get Miss A in her jammies, (I’m not even dealing with bathing her.  She’ll just be the stinky kid at school tomorrow and I’m completely okay with that) check Mr. Man’s homework after he and his dad get home from religious education class in an hour and a half,  and the lists goes on…. But, lest I bore you with my whining and…

    The Raspberry Tradition

It’s that time of year, again. Raspberries! Today was opening day of the raspberry picking season and the kiddos and I indulged in all the very berry goodness.  We did this last year as well which I thoroughly documented here if you would like to go back and read all about the early stages of my fruit picking obsession. I’m sorry to report that my enthusiasm for u pick fruit has not waned one bit since last year.  I will not bore you with the gratuitous berry shots this time around. I promise.   I would like to share a new raspberry recipe I found.  Yum!  First though, we need…

    Never Forget

This book was just published a few weeks ago…it tells the story of Andrea Haberman, her family, and her fiancee, Al in the aftermath of 9/11/01.  Andrea was 25 years old and grew up in a small town not far from mine in Wisconsin.  She was on her very first business trip to NYC-it was the first time she had ever been there.  She had a meeting at 8:30am on the 92nd floor of the north tower of the WTC.  She was nervous and she got there early.  Andrea never made it out. Al and Andrea met in college where they both attended with my BFF, Lisa, a good friend…

    Summer Bridge Activities

I found this workbook series for my boy to work on over the summer and it’s worked out really well so I thought I’d share.  It’s called Summer Bridge Activities-it’s designed to review material from the grade your child just finished in the beginning of summer and then gradually begins to give them a preview of skills for the upcoming grade.  The idea is that the child completes one or two pages each day-each month of summer is color coded and labeled for that day (i.e. the second section, day 18 corresponds to July 18th).  Mostly my boy has been able to complete the pages on his own with minimal…

    Boston!

I’m alive, back from my travels…I haven’t forgotten about you.  I’ve just been a bit under the weather.  A lot under the weather.  I’ve never been so freaking sick.  I’m on day 7 of the world’s most aggressive sinus infection in the history of sinus infections.  If someone could remove the cinder block that has taken up residence on my face that would be much appreciated.  I have never seen so much green mucus in one place before.  And I have children.  Okay…I’m done complaining.  Not really, but I’ll stop for now.  As you can see-I’ve entered the Woe is Me phase of my illness.  I’m done with being a…

    Mother’s Day and Other Musings

See what I mean about the me and the not posting very much until school is over thing?  Sheesh.  I don’t know how other moms are able to pull off working full time all year round.  There’s never any time to do everything you actually need to accomplish in any given day.  Either the children are fed or they have clean laundry.  Never both.  Okay, some how both of those things usually get done in reality but that’s how it feels in my mind.  The only sanity I have is knowing that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and I will have 12 whole weeks off to just concentrate…

Our Favorite Book of the Moment

Taking a break from watching The Royal Wedding coverage to quickly share with you a book my kids and I have been reading over and over again for the last month.  It is very apropos for the season especially here in the Midwest where Spring traditionally takes it’s sweet time in getting here… Love, Love, LOVE this book!!  The illustrations are created from a cut paper technique…so gorgeous.  It’s a simple story about a mother and child waiting for summer to come.  So sweet and beautiful.  Both my kids have it memorized…they call it “The Summer Book” and ask me to read it almost every night.  Nikki McClure has a new book in this style just…
